Paul Smith’s Albemarle Street Store will play host to the work of doll maker and artist Kazumi Akao this month, ‘Gummi Chan’ brings to life 1960’s suburban Japan with an array of cute miniature characters and street scenes.
Kazumi worked alongside production and scene designer Nobuhiko Yoshimitsu to meticulously hand make every figurine, shop front and vehicle. Having lost its ‘habitual happy spirit’ Kazumi wanted to bring to life the Japan of 1961, a place of hope, in a time of optimism, when the economy underwent huge growth and people began to dream of creating a better society.
Paul Smith loved Kazumi and Nobuhiko’s work so much that he decided his London store would be the perfect location to showcase it, in turn they decided to create a Paul Smith shop, with accompanying mini Paul and bicycle.
‘Gummi Chan’ is on display at the Albemarle Street Store from the 27th January to 27th February.
