NEW NOISE: SAM & THE WOMP

We might be sliding into winter but you've only got to listen to Sam & The Womp's Balkan beat-inflected 'Bom Bom' to understand why the summer anthem knocked Rita Ora off the charts to hit Number One. Wonderland caught up with them to find out just what 'womping' entails.

NEW NOISE: Sam & The Womp

Hi guys, for anyone that has been oblivious to the airwaves over the past few months, please introduce yourselves.

Did somebody order a PARTY? Sam- the feral Elvis trumpet playing defacto band leader, The Lady Oo from the land of the cats and synth womper Aaron Audio.

How did you guys start out?

Our route was via the mud and fun of playing gigs and festivals over the last 4 years all over the UK. We recorded an album’s worth of material before Christmas and that was when the amazing people at Stiff signed the band.

Your track went straight to Number 1 in the UK charts. How were you left feeling when you were told the news?

Amazed- we didn’t expect Bom Bom to go to the top as it is very different to other tracks in the chart. We want to thank everyone that got infected by womp and bought the track. The reaction was amazing to Bom Bom when we played it live recently with all the front row of the audience singing the lyrics at us.

How will the band follow up such a massive hit?

Expect the unexpected. Get your dancing shoes ready. We have fresh new banging tunes of which one is the second single. Our album is shaping up massively.

You've just announced a November tour. What festivities can we expect from your live shows?

We will come with our full band line up of 3 brass players, drums, synth, bass, FX and you can all learn how to do the Womp properly.

Who inspires your overall aesthetic as well as your sound?

Imagine if Dali met Warhol with Elvis in Jamaica! Brass'n'bass is our new genre. Making people dance with fat beats, womping bass and bringing the trumpet back to life as a lead instrument in pop music.

So what's womping, exactly'?

Womping is the act of doing the Womp dance or oscillating on your musical instrument. The Womp is the sound Aaron’s synth bass makes- it is “the space between the bass and your face.”

What else can we expect from you guys in the next few months?

Looks like Holland is gonna be Womped in November and festivals in Europe next year looking good. Get your womp on…
