NEW NOISE: KIM ANN FOXMAN

Kim Ann Foxman might be better known as being part of New York dance troupe Hercules and Love Affair but this summer sees Kim branching out as a solo artist. Wonderland spoke to the Hawaiian-born DJ about why she’s done with the band and how she feels about being voted one of the top 50 most stylish women in New York.

NEW NOISE: Kim Ann Foxman

Are there any plans to record with the group again?

No. There aren’t any plans for that. I really decided it was time for me to choose my own adventure and i’m really just focusing on my solo works and other collaborations right now.

Was it a conscious decision to take your solo career away from your previous work with the band and do something completely different?

It was very conscious. I felt it was just time for me to part ways really, and i’m really enjoying things right now.

Your first few solo singles were welcomed with industry applause. How did you feel about the positive response?

I am really happy with the response. I had no idea it was gonna that great. It was really special for me. I got so much positive feedback for it, which feels so nice to feel that love and support.

The single ‘Creature’ was produced by Andy Butler. What other collabs are you working on?

I’m currently working on a collaboration with Tobias Freund, who’s really amazing to work with. I’m about to meet up with Richard X and work together as well which i’m reall

y thrilled about. I did some recent stuff with Snuff Crew, Maya Jane Coles, House of House and Layo and Bushwacka. I’ve been having so much fun working with other people.

You’ve loved 90s house music since growing up in Hawaii. Are you pleased with how the genre is gaining more recognition again now?

Of course. It’s something that I always loved and it’s really nice that its getting a nice audience right now. I love hearing new projects as well, that are just really amazing and cool.

What are your favourite house records at present?

FeekN YOu MK dub by Jodeci and Trackman Lafonte & Bonquiqui’s Pacific House.

What other artists are you championing at the minute?

Bicep is doing some really nice stuff, Snuff Crew, and Omar S. For pop there is an artist called Zhala from Sweden that i think is gonna a big success. She’s really talented and original. I like her voice a lot.

What can we expect from your debut full length record?

There will be moments of dancing as well as a good sing-a-long. It won’t be stuck in one specific genre. Of course it’ll include house-y vibes but some other elements for sure as well. R&B and freestyle influences too, as well as slow jams.

You were voted the 16th most stylish woman in New York. Are you image conscious at all?

I care about my image, but I think I just happen to have a lot of talented and fashionable friends around that inspire me or rub off on me. At the same time I just have to feel like myself and be comfortable.

What can we expect from you for the remainder of the year? Any summer festivals, tours, singles..?

You can expect a new single pretty soon and I’ll be remixing and doing as much touring as I possibly can.
