PREMIERE: KING DINOSAUR – “THE NIGHT”

When he’s not stomping with Utahraptors, King Dinosaur is carving out a place for himself in the bubbling Brighton electronic scene. Blending together ambient vibes with some truly genius glitchy two-step and tantalising vocals, Wonderland premiere his first video, “The Night”.

Who is King Dinosaur?

A dinosaur trying to make a difference.

Where does the name come from?

A 1950s B-movie. My mate Zal (who masterminded the video) thought of it, and I really liked how it sounded. To me, the name isn’t too important in the long run, the music you make sets the tone. It’s like you have to grow into the name.

Who are your influences?

I’m inspired by being around creative people. Its generally not specific songs or artists, but if I had to pick its people like Alby Daniels, 123MRK, Alphabets Heaven. Also the early Jurassic period is a BIG inspiration…

We know you’re from Brighton – what’s the music scene like over there? Has it influenced your music in any way?

The scene here seems to be growing bigger and bigger, everyone’s in a band, DJing or doing something creative. Brighton’s always been a very liberal place, and I think this open-minded quality’s reflected in its music. People aren’t afraid to explore new areas, and develop new styles.

There’s a whole bunch of electronic musicians coming up right now in the UK – do you think the scene’s kind of hit maximum saturation now? How does King Dinosaur stand out?

All it means is that musicians are having to think outside the box more than before. For the scene to hit maximum saturation, there would have to be a massive decline in the creativity of people, which hopefully will never happen! My aim is to create something that can’t be pigeonholed easily within a genre.

You’ve done podcasts before as King Dinosaur – what made you take the leap towards producing your own stuff?

The diversity of the music I’ve come across has pushed me to find my own sound. I was producing a little bit before I did the podcasts, but it kind of got the ball rolling. It helped me to experiment with sounds in new and initiative ways.

So who’s your king of dinosaurs, King Dinosaur? T-Rex or raptor?

It changes everyday, but at the moment I’m rating the Utahraptor.
